School Trip to London by Roy Adams I live in Sydney, Australia, have done for 15 years but my soul and character belongs to Liverpool. Humour and the incredible bond of families are my memories. 1 story still makes me cry. I was working in London in the early 90's when my mum, a primary school teacher at the very working class school of Netherton Moss, called me to say a coach load of kids were coming down for their 1st trip outside of Liverpool and were staying in dormitories at a teaching college which was out of term. My Mum and 2 teachers were all the state funds could afford to look after 40 kids and they were a bit concerned that on the 2nd day they were going to London Zoo and it would be too much. I volunteered ( forced and threatened by my 5ft tall Mum ) into meeting them at the zoo to help out. Anyway the day was incredible, they were mischievous without being over the top, funny and laughed continually.I had forgotten how much Liverpool people laugh. At the end of the day they were all queued up to go into the shop to buy a souvenir. I was at the front of the queue and letting 5 in at a time. This 1 little kid just stood next to me and shuffled about nervously but never moved towards the shop. I told him a few times to go in, as it was his turn but he kept saying he was OK to wait. After a while 1 big chubby kid shouted out bluntly that this kid was poor and his mum never gave him money so there was no point him being in the queue. He looked so sad when I asked him quietly did he have any money and he simply said no. I put 10 pounds into his hand and turned round and told the chubby boy that he did have money, he was just being polite letting the girls go 1st. I watched him walk sheepishly into the shop and come out with a bag and a large smile. Later he sat next to me on the coach and I asked to see what he had bought. He showed a lion and a giraffe. The lion for Gemma and the giraffe for Amy, his younger sisters. No present for himself but in his own words " we never have any money Sir, but my mum and sisters love me and I don't think that makes us poor at all.". I cried then and I do so now as I type.
