Orange songs
by Valerie Pawar
My grandparents were staunch Orange Lodge members.
I can remember by grandmother teaching me all their songs....and to this day I still remember the words!!..Hey there Billy don't catch me..catch that man behind the tree - he belongs to popery and I belong to King Billy!!!! There were many more too.
My Mother told me never to sing them and my grandmother loved it when I recited them. As a child I really had no idea of the meaning.

I can also remember going shopping with my grandmother and cutting through the Mystery which I think was a park in Wavertree. A strange shop was nearby called Mistry (run by Indians and probably one of the first open early till late corner shops).
I always got the two things confused as a child and couldn't understand the park called the Mystery and the shop called Mistry!! I always wanted to go into the shop but by grandmother would never allow me.

My grandmother used to collect what she called her 'divvy' from the co-op and then she would buy something for me. We had to queue to receive it and then she would buy something really nice to eat afterwards. Such a simple thing but how enjoyable to eat the delicious cakes from Sayers.

My great grandparents , grandparents and the family even today are Liverpool FC supporters.
My great uncle and even my Father would never have their dinner if Liverpool lost a game and would retreat into another room to wallow in their gloom and discuss the tactics of the players
and the manager!
I have lots of memories like this - most of them enjoyable and funny!
